I have the original issue framed on my wall. It’s my most cherished item. I was an improviser at Improv Olympic, now called IO Theater, our troupe, Fox Force Five, had a show the Friday after 9/11. We warmed up behind the theater, all of us anxious if we could be funny, if the audience was ready for the funny. We went in, on deck to perform while a troupe was playing before us, to find a packed audience laughing their asses off. We had a great show. Del Close, who started Improv Olympic with the great Charna Halpern, said, “There is something irresistibly funny about a funeral. More basically, I think the point is that beyond the deepest tragedy, there is laughter. Even in the midst of tragedy, there is always the possibility for it.” I’m still performing and teaching improv because I know how important laughter is.

Hijackers surprised to find selves in hell is hilarious, but some of these are just so spot-on and poignant. The greatest Onion issue of all time?
